We Are All Makers
We believe there is a maker in everyone. There is something special about taking an idea, working with your own hands and watching it become something that didn't exist before.
In our family, making has always been part of life — passed down through generations and shared around kitchen tables, in gardens, garages and craft rooms.
We've watched our own children experience that same pride and confidence that comes from being able to say, “I made this.” It's something we believe is worth making time for, at every age.

Making Is Better Together
We've also learned that some of the best parts of creating have very little to do with the finished project.
Our family has spent time at quilt retreats, craft retreats and family getaways, and the things we remember most aren't necessarily the projects we brought home.
We remember the conversations around the table, learning from each other, laughing late into the night and having uninterrupted time with people we love.
There's something about keeping your hands busy that gives you permission to slow down and just be together.
That's the kind of time we want to make room for at Happy Little Haven.
A Haven Close to Home
When a church near our home became empty, we began imagining what it could become.
We saw an opportunity to give the building a new purpose — a safe, welcoming place for creativity, rest and connection.
Because we've experienced many retreats ourselves, we've tried to think about Happy Little Haven from the perspective of the people who will actually stay here: room to spread out, comfortable places to sleep, spaces to gather, thoughtful little conveniences and an atmosphere where you can settle in and stay awhile.
We're creating the kind of retreat we would want to book with our own family and friends.
From Our Family to Yours
Happy Little Haven is personal to us. Jason and I grew up in Owatonna, we're raising our family here, and I've spent my teaching career here. We're makers, gardeners, teachers, learners and lifelong members of this community. We hope that when you arrive at the Haven, you'll feel some of that heart behind it. The Haven has been thoughtfully created for real people to enjoy.
Come with your sewing machine, scrapbook, yarn, paints or whatever you love to make. Come for a family weekend, a girls' getaway or simply some time away with people you don't get to see enough. Bring the project you've been meaning to finish — or don't finish anything at all.
What matters most is that you had the time to be here together.
Because some of the best things we create aren't things at all — they're the connections and memories we make along the way.
